Youth-Lead Workshop in the Bootheel



On September 14th, the FCC Behavioral Health Prevention Resource Center and the Partnerships for Success (PfS), hosted a leadership workshop for youth groups at the MU Delta Research Center in Portageville Missouri. The workshop was facilitated by Jim Conway from the Search Institute, the developers of the 40 Developmental Assets, (visit:; a positive reinforcement intervention adopted as part of the PfS grant for 25 counties in our state. The workshop was the first offered by PfS and Search specifically focused on building youth skills.

The five enthusiastic youth groups and their mentors were diverse and traveled from Doniphan, Cape Girardeau, Charleston, New Madrid and Caruthersville. The groups were recruited by PfS staff from three regional Prevention Resource Centers; Southeast Missouri State in Cape, Southeast Behavioral Health in Poplar Bluff and FCC Behavioral Health in Kennett. The 32 youth were affiliated with existing organizations in their schools and towns such as Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), TRACTION, a youth traffic safety leadership program, and C2000 Charleston, a community-based substance use prevention coalition.

The leadership workshop was interactive and engaging and each group was tasked with selecting, planning and implementing an event or project at their school focused on substance use prevention. Their projects will occur during National Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-31 (visit: and each group was invited to become youth-led ambassadors and form youth coalitions for prevention!
